Nigeria Launches New Framework to Regulate Online Sports Betting Industry

Nigeria Strengthens Online Betting Regulations
Nigeria's National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) has announced a comprehensive new regulatory framework aimed at bringing greater oversight to the country's rapidly expanding online sports betting industry.
The new guidelines, which take effect in the first quarter of 2026, introduce stricter licensing requirements for operators, enhanced player protection measures, and mandatory responsible gambling features across all licensed platforms.
Key Changes for Operators
Under the updated framework, betting companies must now maintain a minimum capital requirement of ₦500 million and demonstrate robust anti-money laundering protocols. Operators will also be required to implement deposit limits, self-exclusion tools, and age verification systems using Nigeria's National Identification Number (NIN).
Growing Market Attracts International Interest
Nigeria's betting market has experienced remarkable growth, with industry estimates suggesting the sector generates over $2 billion annually. The country's young population and widespread smartphone adoption have made it one of Africa's most attractive markets for international operators.
Several European betting giants have expressed interest in entering the Nigerian market following the regulatory clarity provided by the new framework.
Consumer Protection Priority
The NLRC emphasized that protecting Nigerian bettors remains the primary objective. New rules mandate that operators contribute 1% of gross gaming revenue to a national fund supporting problem gambling treatment and prevention programs.
Industry stakeholders have largely welcomed the changes, viewing them as essential steps toward creating a sustainable and trustworthy betting environment in Nigeria.
