One book, or the whole board: Nigeria prices the Premier League's opening round

The 2026/27 Premier League season starts on Friday 21 August, and the Nigerian board is already quoted from Arsenal v Coventry on the Friday night through to Fulham v Chelsea on the Monday.
That is enough to answer the question that decides more Nigerian betting slips than any tip does: not who wins, but what the same opinion is worth depending on where you back it. On the opening round, the answer is stark.
The typical Nigerian book prices the match-result market on this round with a 5.54% margin built into the odds. Take the best price available anywhere on the Nigerian board, outcome by outcome, and the same round prices at 1.00%. Not a cheaper book. The board, read across all of them.
The gap between one book and the whole board is bigger than the gap between the cheapest book and the most expensive.
₦60,000, six matches, ₦9,200 of difference
Six fixtures in this round were priced by every book below, which makes them the only fair comparison, because a book that passed on a match cannot be judged on it. Back the favourite in each of those six at ₦10,000 a time and the returns, if every one lands, look like this.
- Best of the board₦138,500
- AccessBet₦137,900, leaving ₦600 behind
- 1xBet₦137,800, leaving ₦700 behind
- Bet9ja₦137,400, leaving ₦1,100 behind
- MozzartBet₦136,000, leaving ₦2,500 behind
- BetKing₦135,700, leaving ₦2,800 behind
- Betano₦133,700, leaving ₦4,800 behind
- 22Bet, Betwinner and Paripesa₦132,900, leaving ₦5,600 behind
- Mojabet₦132,100, leaving ₦6,400 behind
- Campeonbet₦131,600, leaving ₦6,900 behind
- Livescore Bet₦130,000, leaving ₦8,500 behind
- Betway₦129,300, leaving ₦9,200 behind
₦9,200 separates top from bottom on six bets. Nobody changed their mind about a single match to earn it.
Which Nigerian book actually prices sharpest
Margin is the bookmaker's cut baked into the odds: add up the implied chances of every outcome in a market and whatever it comes to above 100% is the house's. Across those same six fixtures, the Nigerian market separates into four clear tiers. Figures below run overall, then match result, then over/under 2.5, then both teams to score.
- 1xBet3.95% overall · 1.55% · 2.76% · 7.55%
- AccessBet4.58% overall · 3.03% · 5.15% · 5.57%
- Bet9ja4.63% overall · 4.32% · 4.62% · 4.96%
- BetKing5.33% overall · 4.17% · 6.14% · 5.67%
- Betano5.68% overall · 5.08% · 4.88% · 7.07%
- 22Bet, Betwinner, Paripesa6.26% overall · 5.36% · 5.87% · 7.55%
- Campeonbet6.95% overall · 6.99% · 6.83% · 7.03%
- MozzartBet7.11% overall · 5.32% · 8.14% · 7.87%
- Mojabet7.67% overall · 6.56% · 7.94% · 8.50%
- Livescore Bet8.74% overall · 8.77% · 7.50% · 9.94%
- Betway9.37% overall · 10.08% · 9.96% · 8.06%
1xBet is the sharpest book in Nigeria on this evidence and it is not close. A margin of 1.55% on match result is a European-exchange number. But read along its row rather than down the column and the strategy is obvious: 1.55% where you compare, 7.55% where you don't.
Bet9ja is the only book in the market that charges roughly the same everywhere it quotes: 4.32%, 4.62%, 4.96%. That consistency is worth more to a punter who bets goals markets than 1xBet's headline number is.
The cut climbs the further you get from the match result
- Match result5.54% at a typical book, 1.00% at the best board
- Over / Under 2.5 goals6.33% at a typical book, 2.02% at the best board
- Both teams to score7.26% at a typical book, 3.10% at the best board
Every Nigerian book charges more for goals markets than for the match result, and the pattern is too uniform to be coincidence. Match result is the market punters price-check; both-teams-to-score is the market they add to an accumulator without looking.
The practical consequence is that shopping around pays most on exactly the markets people shop least. A ₦5,000 both-teams-to-score leg placed at the best Nigerian price instead of an average one is worth roughly 4% more before the match has kicked off.

- Fulham v Chelsea, Mon 24 Aug3.72 1xBet / 3.99 AccessBet / 2.05 MozzartBet or Campeonbet · 27 / 25 / 48%
Only one match in the round is priced as close to even as a league game gets: Ipswich against Sunderland, 35 / 29 / 36. Only one is priced as effectively over. Arsenal at 1.22 gives Coventry a 6% shout, the shortest price of the weekend.
The two away favourites are the interesting ones. Liverpool at Newcastle (50%) and Chelsea at Fulham (48%) are both rated better than even money to win away from home in round one, and both are priced right across the Nigerian market, and they are the weekend's two most closely contested boards.
Where the books are furthest apart
- Coventry to win at Arsenal14.50 at one book, 18.03 at another, 24% better
- Hull City to beat Manchester United7.00 against 8.80, 26% better
- Bournemouth at Manchester City5.40 against 6.65, 23% better
- Hull City v Manchester United, the draw4.33 against 5.02, 16% better
- Newcastle v Liverpool, the draw3.60 against 4.16, 16% better
Every one of the widest disagreements in the round is on an underdog or a draw, and that is a rule rather than a coincidence. Grade every match-result price in the round by how far it sits below the best on the board and the bias is clean:
- Favourites, under 2.003.13% below the best price on average
- Middling, 2.00 to 4.004.38% below
- Longshots, over 4.007.25% below
Backing a favourite, one Nigerian book is much like another, since three percent covers the field. Backing a longshot, the book you choose is worth more than twice as much. ₦35,300 of the round's biggest single gap sits on one price: Coventry at Arsenal, 14.50 at one book and 18.03 at another, on a ₦10,000 stake.
On two markets this round the disagreement is wide enough that the best prices across the board sum to under 100%: Manchester City v Bournemouth on the match result, and Newcastle v Liverpool on both teams to score. That is a measure of how far apart the books are, not a strategy: prices are a snapshot and the shortest of them will have moved before kick-off.
Three accounts cover 86% of the best board
Nobody holds an account everywhere. The useful question is how few you need before comparing stops paying. Across every outcome in the round:
- 1xBet aloneholds 43% of the best prices, captures 98.2% of the board's value
- Plus AccessBet70% of the best prices, 99.3% of the value
- Plus Bet9ja86% of the best prices, 99.8% of the value
- Plus MozzartBet93% of the best prices, 99.9% of the value
The value you actually capture closes faster than the share of best prices does. The fourth account is worth almost nothing; the third is worth having.
One caveat on that shortlist: 1xBet did not price Arsenal v Coventry, and AccessBet did not price Hull City v Manchester United. A shortlist is only as good as the matches its books choose to quote, and the Friday night opener is exactly where that thins out.
22Bet, Betwinner and Paripesa are one price list
22Bet, Betwinner and Paripesa posted the same number on every price they share this round: every outcome, every market, to the second decimal. Not similar. Identical. One price list wearing three brands.
For a punter that is a real finding, not trivia. Holding accounts at all three adds nothing that any one of them does not already give you, which is why they share a rung of the table above. The Nigerian market offers fewer independent opinions about this round than its shopfronts suggest.
What one round can and cannot tell you
The board is not uniformly sharp, and the pattern is not the obvious one. Manchester City v Bournemouth and Brighton v Aston Villa priced to within a rounding error of a fair book; Ipswich v Sunderland, the most evenly matched fixture of the round and the one a punter is most likely to want a price on, carries the loosest best board of the round at 1.65%. The tightest boards are not on the biggest matches or the most heavily traded ones. They are wherever the sharp pricers happened to post.
Watch the goals markets, not the headline. Every book in the market charges its highest margin on both-teams-to-score. If that holds through September, it is the most durable edge available to a Nigerian punter: the market where comparison is rarest is the market where comparison is worth most.
The table is the part that will move. One round describes a weekend; it does not rank a season. 1xBet holding 43% of the best board is a genuinely large share, and the question the next few rounds answer is whether that is a pricing policy or an opening-weekend posture. The structural findings should hold: where the margin sits, the shared price list, the shape of the favourite-longshot bias. The order of the table is not settled yet.
This is the first instalment. We will re-run this after every round and publish what changed.

Odds from the Nigerian bookmakers listed above on the Premier League fixtures of 21 to 24 August 2026, as at 18 August. The bookmaker table and the ₦10,000 comparison use only the fixtures every listed book priced, so no book is judged on a match it did not quote.
