An each-way bet is two bets of the same size: one on the selection to win, one on it to place. A 10 each-way bet therefore costs 20. The place half is settled at a fraction of the win odds, usually a quarter or a fifth, and only the part above evens is reduced.

Worked example

10 each way at 5.00 with quarter odds costs 20. If it wins you get 70 back, a profit of 50. If it only places you get 20 back, exactly what you staked. At any shorter price, a bet that places loses money.

Common questions

Why does my each-way bet cost double?

Because it is two bets. The stake box here is the stake per part, which is how bookmakers ask for it, and the total staked is shown separately so the real outlay is never a surprise.

Which place terms should I choose?

The bookmaker sets them for each event and shows them beside the market. A quarter of the odds is common on football outrights; horse racing terms change with the size of the field.

Can an each-way bet lose money when it places?

Yes, and it often does. If the place return is less than the total staked you finish down even though half the bet won. This calculator shows that as a negative profit rather than hiding it.
