Mozambique Mobile Betting Market Sees Record Growth as Operators Expand Digital Services

Mozambique's mobile betting sector has experienced unprecedented growth in the first quarter of 2025, with major operators reporting a 45% increase in active users compared to the same period last year. The surge comes as international betting companies accelerate their digital transformation across the Southern African region.
Leading operators including Betway and 1xBet have launched enhanced mobile applications tailored to the Mozambican market, featuring Portuguese-language interfaces and local payment integrations including M-Pesa and Vodacom M-Kesh. These developments have made betting more accessible to urban and rural populations alike.
The Mozambican Gaming Inspection Board (Inspecção Geral de Jogos) has simultaneously strengthened its regulatory framework, implementing new player protection measures and responsible gambling initiatives. The regulator now requires all licensed operators to provide self-exclusion tools and deposit limits.
Industry analysts attribute the growth to increased smartphone penetration and improved mobile internet infrastructure across the country. With football remaining the most popular betting sport, operators have also expanded their live betting offerings and in-play markets.
The government anticipates significant tax revenue increases from the sector, with projections suggesting mobile betting could contribute over USD 15 million in taxes annually by 2026.
