Ghana Betting Commission Launches New Mobile Betting License Framework for 2025
The Gaming Commission of Ghana has introduced a comprehensive regulatory framework for mobile betting operators, effective January 2025. The new regulations aim to streamline licensing processes and enhance player protection across the country's rapidly growing digital betting market.
Under the updated framework, mobile betting operators must obtain specialized digital licenses, implement mandatory age verification systems, and maintain dedicated responsible gambling tools. The Commission estimates the move will generate an additional GHS 50 million in annual tax revenue while creating over 500 new jobs in the technology sector.
"This regulation brings Ghana's mobile betting industry in line with international standards," said Commission Chairman Peter Ofori. "We're balancing innovation with consumer protection, ensuring a safe environment for Ghanaian bettors."
The new framework also includes provisions for data protection, anti-money laundering measures, and a centralized player self-exclusion register. Major operators including Betway, 1xBet, and SportyBet have already expressed support for the regulations, with several planning to expand their local operations.
Industry analysts predict the formalized framework will attract increased foreign investment and legitimize Ghana's position as West Africa's emerging betting hub.
