The long shot is where South Africa's market takes its cut

South Africa's bookmakers have finished pricing the Premier League's opening weekend, and the cost of a bet here depends far less on which match you fancy than on how long the price is.
Back a favourite in this market and you are paying about as little as this market ever asks: the shortest prices sit within two percent of the best number available. Back something at 4.00 or longer and that penalty more than triples.
That is the favourite-longshot bias, and it is old as bookmaking. What makes the South African board worth reading is how steeply it applies. The same bettor, on the same afternoon, is treated very differently depending on whether the selection is expected to win.
Two percent to back a favourite. Seven to back a long shot. Same weekend, same market, same slip.
What the weekend looks like at the best price
Below is the highest number quoted on each result in this market, the book holding it, and what the market itself makes of the match once the margin is taken out.

- Brighton v Aston Villa, Sun 23 Aug2.33 10bet South Africa / 3.70 10bet South Africa / 3.05 10bet South Africa · 42 / 26 / 32%
- Newcastle v Liverpool, Sun 23 Aug3.70 SunBet / 4.00 10bet South Africa / 1.98 10bet South Africa · 26 / 24 / 49%
- Fulham v Chelsea, Mon 24 Aug3.65 World Sports Betting / 3.88 Gbets / 2.05 World Sports Betting · 27 / 25 / 48%
Two matches are effectively settled in the pricing. Arsenal are rated an 82% chance at home, and Manchester City 66%, which is as close to a formality as a league weekend offers. At the other end, Ipswich v Sunderland is quoted as a coin toss with a draw attached, and Newcastle v Liverpool and Fulham v Chelsea are both priced with the visitor narrowly favoured.
Notice where the best numbers cluster. On most of these matches the leading price on all three results comes from the same place, which is less a coincidence than a pricing policy.
What the market charges, market by market
Margin is the bookmaker's cut written into the odds. Add up what every result in a market implies and the amount above 100% is the house's share. Read across the three markets and the pattern is consistent.
- Match result6.15% at a typical book, 2.57% at the best available price
- Over and under 2.5 goals6.96% at a typical book, 4.67% at the best available price
- Both teams to score7.34% at a typical book, 4.94% at the best available price
Match result is the honest one, and it is honest by a distance: taking the best number on each result cuts the cost by more than half. Goals markets do not reward the same effort nearly as well, because the spread between the keenest and the dearest quote on an over or a both-teams-to-score line is narrower to begin with.
The practical reading is that comparing prices pays best exactly where South Africans bet most, which is the result of the match.
Which book prices sharpest
Averaged across the same matches, the figures below run overall, then match result, then over and under 2.5 goals, then both teams to score.

- Sportingbet8.32% overall · 8.28% · 8.16% · 8.52%
- Betway9.36% overall · 10.08% · 9.98% · 8.02%
World Sports Betting prices the match result at 2.83%, which is not a South African number so much as a European one. The dearest book in this market charges more than three times that on the same bet.
The order changes when you move off the result. 10bet South Africa is second on match result and among the dearest on both teams to score. Supabets is the reverse. A bettor who reads a single headline figure and picks a book from it is choosing on the wrong number.
Where the books disagree
The widest gaps of the weekend are all on outcomes nobody expects to happen, which is the bias in its plainest form.
- Hull City v Manchester United, home win7.00 at one book against 8.50 at another, 21% better
- Manchester City v Bournemouth, away win5.40 at one book against 6.40 at another, 19% better
- Arsenal v Coventry, the draw6.50 at one book against 7.60 at another, 17% better
- Manchester City v Bournemouth, the draw4.60 at one book against 5.25 at another, 14% better
- Arsenal v Coventry, away win15.22 at one book against 17.00 at another, 12% better
- Favourites, under 2.002.00% below the best price on average
- Middling prices, 2.00 to 4.003.47% below
- Long shots, over 4.007.23% below
Hull City at home to Manchester United is the standout: the same result is available at 7.00 in one place and 8.50 in another. On a R500 stake that is R750 of difference for the identical opinion.
Grade every match-result price by how far it sits below the best available and the ladder is unmistakable. A favourite is barely worth shopping for. A long shot always is.
Where the best prices actually sit
Nobody holds an account everywhere, so the useful question is how quickly the best of the board becomes reachable.
- World Sports Betting29% of the best prices, 98.8% of the value
- Adding BoyleSports50% of the best prices, 97.8% of the value
- Adding 10bet South Africa66% of the best prices, 99.0% of the value
- Adding SunBet80% of the best prices, 99.6% of the value
The share of best prices climbs slowly here, which tells you the market is genuinely competitive rather than led by one house. The value captured climbs much faster, and that gap between the two is the point: you do not need the best price on everything to get almost all of what the best price is worth.
What this weekend says about the season ahead
The next round is already quoted, and it is not quoted kindly. Prices for the following weekend are on the board here well before anyone else has posted them, carrying roughly four times the margin of the matches about to kick off. Early money pays for the privilege. If you are betting a week out in this market, you are paying a premium that disappears by Friday.
Judge a book on the market you actually bet. The spread between the keenest and the dearest quote on match result is far wider than on goals, so the choice of book matters most to someone who bets results and barely at all to someone who bets overs.
The bias is the thing to watch. If the penalty on long prices holds through September, it is the most reliable pattern in this market, and the one that most rewards checking a second price before the bet goes on.
This is the first instalment. We will run the same numbers after every round and publish what moved.

Method
Odds from the South African bookmakers listed above on the Premier League fixtures of 21 to 24 August 2026, as at 18 August. Margin is the sum of the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market, less 100%. The best available price takes the highest number quoted on each outcome anywhere in the South African market. Percentages beside a fixture are the market's own view of it once margin is stripped out. Odds move; the numbers here describe a snapshot, not a guarantee. 18+. Bet responsibly.
